A FATHER DEFINED
We asked our panel “what comes to mind when you think of a father or father figure?“
and the definition is that it is a person who is responsible, holds themselves accountable, and is consistently involved and present as a guardian, pillar, and supporter.
While, for some people, “father” may only refer to a biological parent, a father-figure is a person who fills that position.
A father or father figure is someone who provides guidance, support, and love to their children. Cultural nuances may shape specific roles and expectations, but the essence remains that of a caring and responsible parental figure(Black, Male, 18 – 24, LMP)
CAN MOTHERS' BE HONOURED ON FATHERS' DAY?
There is still quite some debate with regards to celebrating Moms on Fathers’ Day (a sentiment of female headed households). Those in support want to pay tribute to their Mothers for holding fort, while the opposing view believes that there’s already enough spotlight on mothers.
FATHERS' DAY CELEBRATION
“Mothers should be celebrated, same as single Fathers, must be celebrated on Mother’s Day. Because they played both roles in their children’s life so they must be honored to do that, it’s an amazing thing to do. It’s a special role to play (Black, Male, 35 – 49, GP)”
HONOURING FATHERS' DAY
“In households where there is no present father, whether due to being in a single-parent household or other circumstances, Mother’s Day often takes on an even more significant role. Mothers in these households often fulfill both maternal and paternal responsibilities, playing a dual role in raising their children.
While some may argue that mothers should be celebrated on Father’s Day in these situations, it is important to acknowledge that Father’s Day specifically recognizes and honors the role of fathers or father figures. It is a day designated to appreciate and celebrate the unique contributions that fathers make in their children’s lives” (Black, Male, 25-34, GP)
