Breastfeeding rates in South Africa are declining. While the benefits of breastfeeding are widely recognized, the reality for many mothers is far more complex. African Response conducted a poll of 205 mothers with children under two years old to understand the factors influencing their feeding choices.
What we discovered:
Combined feeding is the norm. Many mothers are combining breast milk with formula, with formula use increasing as babies grow.
Formula feeding is prevalent. Two-thirds of mothers surveyed use formula, indicating a significant shift away from exclusive breastfeeding.
Obstacles are both practical and health related. Returning to work, lack of childcare, and insufficient milk production are among the top challenges mothers face.
Breast pump usage is low. Only one in four mothers use a breast pump, despite its potential to support breastfeeding goals.
Younger mothers face unique challenges. This group is more likely to experience difficulties with breastfeeding and may require targeted support.
Supporting Breastfeeding Mothers:
Our findings highlight the need for comprehensive support systems to empower mothers in their breastfeeding journeys. Here’s how we can make a difference:
- Promote the benefits of breast pumps: Educate mothers about the convenience and versatility of breast pumps, especially for working mothers.
- Address health-related barriers: Provide education, resources, and medical support to address concerns about milk production, pain, and other breastfeeding challenges.
- Empower younger mothers: Develop targeted programs to address the unique needs and concerns of younger mothers.
- Create supportive environments: Advocate for breastfeeding-friendly workplaces and public spaces.
