October may be Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but how much do South African women really know about breast health? African Response, a research company committed to uncovering critical insights, conducted a poll to explore this important question. We surveyed 403 women aged 18 and above, delving into their understanding of breast cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.
What we found may surprise you:
Knowledge gaps are widespread. Many women lack essential information about both invasive and non-invasive treatment options. Awareness of self-exams and mammograms is also insufficient.
Family conversations are rare. Few women learn about breast health from family or friends, highlighting a missed opportunity for open communication and support.
Early detection is key, but the full benefits aren’t clear. While women understand that early detection improves survival rates, many are unaware of the broader advantages, like less invasive treatments and reduced costs.
Younger women need targeted support. This group often feels less comfortable discussing breast health and needs tailored resources to empower them.
Bridging the Knowledge Gap:
Our findings reveal a critical need for improved education and awareness initiatives. Here’s how we can make a difference:
- Expand awareness campaigns: Partner with healthcare providers, diagnostic centres, and influencers to reach women through diverse platforms.
- Enhance educational tools: Develop accessible resources that clearly explain self-exams, mammograms, and treatment options.
- Foster family-centric conversations: Encourage open dialogue about breast health within families, building generational knowledge and support.
- Support workplace policies: Advocate for lactation rooms and health education programs to empower women in the workplace.
- Target younger demographics: Use youth-friendly platforms and messaging to address the unique needs of younger women.
