Press ReleaseAre 2010 FIFA World Cup tickets priced too high for fans?BRYANSTON – Almost half (46%) of metropolitan South African adults are not willing to purchase tickets to the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches, according to market research company African Response. African Response polled 400 respondents representative of the major cities in South African population (Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Pretoria) to find out whether they would be willing to buy 2010 FIFA World Cup tickets given the recently confirmed prices. Special category tickets for South African residents will range from R136 per ticket for a group stage match to around R6 000 per ticket for a final match. Are South Africans disinterested in watching the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches or have high ticket prices set some back? Out of the 400 polled, 167 people indicated that they will purchase tickets with only 49 respondents saying that they were not sure whether or not they would. Looking at the results of last month’s full 2010 Barometer reading, 88% of South Africans said that they will be watching the matches on television. This could mean that, while many South Africans are in fact interested in watching the soccer matches, ticket pricing may be limiting how they are able to do so. Looking at the countries overall optimism in South Africa’s readiness to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, 73% of the South Africans remain confident. African Response’s 2010 Barometer is a monthly poll which measures public confidence in South Africa’s preparations for the big event. February’s results represent the views of 400 respondents interviewed in Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town in August this year. The full African Response Barometer is released on a quarterly basis.
